The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old woman, Nafisat Lateef, for allegedly poisoning a three-year-old boy, the child of her tenant, at Omifon community in Odigbo Local Government Area.
DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the state police spokesperson, disclosed the arrest on Friday, saying the incident occurred following a dispute between the suspect and the child’s mother, Rofiat.
Jimoh said the suspect reportedly gave the child a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous on Tuesday morning.
“The incident occurred on Tuesday, 4th February 2026, at about 8:30 am, when the suspect allegedly gave the victim, Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous,” he stated.
The toddler reportedly began vomiting shortly after consuming the substance and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention.
“The police detectives, during a swift and intelligence-led operation, arrested the suspect,” Jimoh added.
He noted that the substance believed to be poison was recovered during the investigation.
Lateef is currently in police custody, where she has made useful statements. The police have launched a full-scale investigation into the matter, and the case is expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.
This shocking incident has sparked outrage in the community, raising concerns about tenant-landlord disputes escalating to violent acts, especially involving children.
