The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has called on enthusiasts of ‘ponmo’ (cow skin) in the state to consider reducing their consumption to maintain clean and healthy air quality.
Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of the environmental agency, emphasized that the burning of cow skin releases harmful carbon emissions into the air, impacting human health.
Ponmo is produced through an extensive process of burning cow skin, washing the roasted skin, and boiling it for several hours to achieve the desired texture.
According to data from cleanairfunf.org, air pollution caused by traffic, biomass fuel burning, and shipping poses significant threats to sustainable growth in Lagos.
Ajayi, speaking against the backdrop of LASEPA’s air quality data, revealed that agricultural emissions, including the processing of hides and skin, contribute to poor air quality.
The data across 22 measured areas indicated varying air quality, with Agege, Akoka, Ojo, and Ketu having the most unhealthy air.
The general manager suggested solutions to contain emissions, including planting trees to absorb carbon, carpooling to reduce vehicular emissions, and adopting solar energy over generators.
