Leaders of Nigeria’s organized labor have convened at the presidential Villa in a crucial meeting summoned by the presidency in a final attempt to avert a nationwide strike planned by labor unions to protest the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have separately initiated efforts to stage a national strike set to begin on Tuesday.
The government had previously attempted to thwart the strike by citing an ex parte injunction obtained several months ago.
However, labour dismissed this argument, asserting that they were not bound by an injunction with a time limit.
Following this, the government extended an invitation to organized labor for meetings last Friday. Still, the labour centers ignored the invitations, citing their lateness.
The latest invitation came after numerous affiliated unions, including those representing health, education, and electricity workers, instructed their members to heed the strike notice.
Today’s meeting, scheduled to commence at 2:00 pm in the Presidential Villa, saw several ministers waiting since the designated time.
However, the leaders of Nigeria’s organized labor arrived around 3:15 pm for the crucial meeting aimed at preventing the imminent strike.
The TUC delegation is led by General Secretary Nuhu Toro, while the NLC delegation is headed by President Comrade Joe Ajaero.
In attendance from the government side are Minister of Labour Simon Lalong, Minister of State Nikuru, Minister of National Planning, Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs.
The government delegation is led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
