The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has moved to dispel misconceptions surrounding the salary structure of its street sweepers amidst recent public concern sparked by a viral video alleging underpayment.
In a statement issued by Jibril Gawat, Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fair wages and adequate working conditions for its workforce.
The agency clarified that as of February, street sweepers are guaranteed a monthly salary of ₦40,000, while supervisors receive ₦50,000.
These adjustments, according to LAWMA, comply with the minimum wage standard and are part of ongoing efforts to enhance employee welfare.
Addressing the controversy, LAWMA emphasized that the video, which claimed some workers were being paid as low as ₦30,000, did not accurately represent current wage structures.
The authority clarified that street sweepers are employed through contracted private companies, which are responsible for remunerating their employees and ensuring compliance with labor laws.
“The welfare of our workforce remains a top priority,” stated LAWMA’s spokesperson.
“We provide comprehensive support to our employees, including health and safety training, accident insurance coverage, and the provision of necessary work attire.”
Moreover, the agency underscored its commitment to investigating any reported discrepancies or contract violations promptly.
It reiterated that measures are in place to guarantee fair treatment and improve the working conditions of all street sweepers under its purview.
LAWMA acknowledged the indispensable role played by street sweepers in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of Lagos streets.
It expressed gratitude for their dedication and assured the public of ongoing initiatives aimed at further enhancing their welfare and job satisfaction.
