Lawyer Decries Alleged Brutal Beating At Lagos Police Station

In a shocking revelation, Lagos-based lawyer Timothy Olamide Olaniyi has come forward with claims of being subjected to a brutal beating akin to a “condemned criminal” during a visit to the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja. Olamide had gone to the police station regarding a case that had been ongoing for a month, representing his colleague in the matter.

Olamide, recounting the incident on his X profile (@Timo_Olamide), described the beating as “merciless,” expressing disbelief at the treatment he received while simply seeking information about a client’s arrest.

He highlighted that, during his visit, a police officer warned him that not all cases are handled by lawyers, adding that he approached the station with utmost respect and humility.

Responding to the lawyer’s grievance, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, urged Olamide to provide specific details, including the section of the police station, the name of the involved police officer, and suggested reporting the incident directly to the state police Complaint Response Unit.

In another twist to the story, a user (@KingEsene) advised Olamide to reach out to former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State Branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, who served from 2017 to 2019.

Olamide acknowledged that he had already contacted Ikwuazom through WhatsApp but had yet to receive a reply.

The article concludes with a reference to a previous case involving a 36-year-old lawyer, Olumide Sonupe, who was hospitalized after being detained by the police while seeking bail for his client.

The incident led to a peaceful protest by members of the Lagos State NBA branch, drawing attention from human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, who called for a thorough investigation into the reported brutality against lawyers in Lagos State.
