Lawyers Allege Threats To Whistleblower’s Life In Backdoor Petition Filing Scandal

In a startling revelation, over 400 lawyers from across Nigeria convened on Friday to raise alarm over persistent threats to the life of Barr. Yetunde Olubunmi Shaibu, Convener of the United Front for Democracy (UFD).

The lawyers, under the banner of the Committee for the Defence of Democracy, expressed concern about the alleged threats emanating from interests associated with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its Governorship candidate.

The alarm was triggered by UFD’s whistleblowing on an alleged attempt by the SDP to file a petition against the outcome of the November 11 election through the backdoor, an act that would circumvent the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The lawyers claim that the SDP failed to file within the 21-day window prescribed by law.

Since UFD’s revelation earlier this week, Shaibu has reportedly received numerous threat messages, and her family members have faced harassment.

The lawyers held an emergency press conference in Abuja, calling for thorough investigations into the threats and urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security chiefs to ensure the safety of their colleague.

The lawyers also cast doubts on the Secretary of the Tribunal’s claim of being attacked and having petitions stolen shortly after the whistleblowing.

They emphasized the need for a closer look at the circumstances surrounding the alleged backdoor petition filing.

The lawyers challenged the SDP to provide evidence of filing within the stipulated time frame and questioned the procedural aspects of the alleged attack on the Tribunal Secretary. They called for a transparent investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of upholding democracy and the rule of law.
