The Chairman of Delta State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) Chief Goodluck Ofobruku has disclosed that Local Government pensioners are not the responsibility of the state government to pay their pensions.
The Labour Chairman spoke to journalists on Thursday at his office in Asaba while clarifying that its the responsibility of the local government service commission to pay their retirees.
He noted that the state government is only magnanimous enough to release billions of Naira to assist local government; hence, the state is not owing the local government pensioners a dine at the first place.
He maintained that the state governor has released state money on five different occasions to his knowledge to local government to enable the local government service commission who are the employer of those local government employees to pay their retirees.
He added that state government is responsible for state civil servants and those that have retired from the state civil service and that the pension liability of the state was 78billion, saying governor Okowa has paid 70biliion out of it just as he expressed confident that the governor will pay more before leaving office.
He said those local government pensioners that were demonstrating on the street were just playing to the gallery and for political consideration, that they were employed by the local government.
He said governor Okowa is augmenting payment of local government salaries, that the minimum wage local government could not pay
He reiterated that the local government retirees are supposed to be paid by local government service commission and even as that the state governor has been magnanimous enough to release billions of Naira to assist the local government, Okowa is not owing local government a dine but he is just magnanimous in helping them.
He said the Local Government Union leadership known that it not the state government that is owning the retirees, but the local government Council.
As leader of the workers, I will not castigate government when the government is doing the right thing, as long as pension is concerned in the state governor Okowa has done marvelously well.
