Newly elected Catholic Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, has reaffirmed the Church’s traditional stance on marriage, stating that the family is rooted in the “stable union between a man and a woman.”
Pope Leo made the remarks on Friday during his first major public statement as head of the Catholic Church, addressing the Vatican’s diplomatic corps in a private audience ahead of his formal installation Mass on Sunday.
The audience with ambassadors accredited to the Holy See is customary for a new pope, serving as an opportunity to outline his vision and priorities to representatives of world governments.
In his speech, Pope Leo underscored the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of society, including the unborn, elderly, and migrants.
He urged world leaders to uphold human dignity and invest in families as a foundation for building harmonious societies.
“It is the responsibility of government leaders to work to build harmonious and peaceful civil societies,” the pontiff said.
“This can be achieved above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman.”
Reiterating the Catholic Church’s pro-life position, Pope Leo condemned abortion and advocated for the protection of religious freedom.
He also expressed his commitment to advancing inter-religious dialogue during his papacy.
“No one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, including the vulnerable, and the unborn,” he said.
Pope Leo XIV’s comments come at a time of increasing global debates surrounding LGBTQ rights and traditional family structures.
His remarks are expected to draw attention from both supporters and critics of the Church’s longstanding doctrines.
The pope’s formal inauguration Mass is scheduled to hold on Sunday, where he is expected to outline further details of his papal agenda.
