The Kano State Police command has arrested 269 suspects for their involvement in violent acts, destruction, and looting.
According to Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, the suspects exploited the nationwide strike to unleash chaos, targeting both public and private properties.
Items recovered from the suspects include many jerricans of 25 litres of groundnut oil, a large quantity of stationeries, foodstuffs, and other valuable properties.
These individuals are currently held at the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and will be charged upon completion of investigations.
Simultaneously, the Nasarawa State Police Command apprehended 25 suspected protesters in Keffi for looting shops. Umar Shehu-Nadada, the state’s Commissioner of Police, reported that the protest was initially peaceful but was hijacked by miscreants, including mobilized children.
In response to the violence, a dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on Mararaba and other towns in the Karu LGA, prohibiting vehicle and pedestrian movement from 6pm to 6am.
James Thomas, the LGA chairman, stated that all markets, shopping malls, shops, and other business premises must remain closed during these hours to maintain order.
Adding to the nationwide unrest, Daura in Katsina State experienced significant tension as angry protesters descended upon the residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The protesters, chanting “Bama yi! Bama yi! Bama yi!” (“we don’t want” in Hausa), expressed their frustration with the country’s economic situation.
The protest, part of the broader #EndBadGovernance movement, saw attempts to breach Buhari’s residence.
A witness described scenes of bonfires and loud chanting, but an intervention from an unidentified individual from Buhari’s residence helped de-escalate the situation temporarily.
Following their encounter at Buhari’s home, the protesters moved towards the palace of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk.
Security operatives shot one protester in the leg while attempting to disperse the crowd.
The violence also reached the residence of Alhaji Musa Uba, the Magajin Gari, where minor damages were reported.
Despite the unrest, a resident confirmed that Daura had returned to calm, with heavy security presence guarding key locations.
