In a solemn ceremony held at the Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure, the acting governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was officially sworn in as the state governor following the untimely death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday.

The swearing-in event, presided over by Chief Justice Olusegun Odusola, marked the transition of leadership in Ondo State.

Justice Odusola, who had been appointed as the 12th Chief Judge by Akeredolu in February 2023, officiated the ceremony.

Aiyedatiwa’s ascension to the governorship had been anticipated, with earlier reports indicating his imminent swearing-in on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital.

The new governor was already en route from Igbokoda, where he had spent the Christmas and New Year break.

The announcement of Akeredolu’s passing sent shockwaves, with the 67-year-old politician succumbing to cancer.

Akeredolu had returned to Nigeria in September after a prolonged medical leave in Germany, only to embark on another leave recently following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to hand over power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa.

During Akeredolu’s absence, Aiyedatiwa diligently served as the Acting Governor, overseeing the state’s affairs.

Akeredolu’s attempt to govern remotely from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, had sparked public outrage, emphasizing the need for stable leadership in the face of health challenges.

As Ondo State enters a new chapter under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, condolences and reactions have poured in from various quarters mourning the loss of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
