French President Emmanuel Macron has assured Nigeria of Paris’ renewed commitment to supporting the country’s intensified fight against terrorism and widening security threats across several states.
Macron, in a message shared on X on Sunday, said he had spoken with President Bola Tinubu to convey France’s solidarity as Nigeria confronts repeated killings, mass abductions, and violent raids, especially in the northern region.
“No one can remain a bystander,” Macron wrote, stressing that the deepening insecurity requires coordinated international action.
“I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North. At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement.”
The French leader’s assurance comes as Nigeria faces one of its most turbulent security periods in recent years, marked by back-to-back attacks, school kidnappings and deadly raids on rural communities.
President Tinubu had on November 26 declared a nationwide security emergency following a series of high-profile attacks.
The President also ordered the armed forces and police to embark on accelerated recruitment to reinforce security operations nationwide.
In recent weeks, attacks in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger states have triggered widespread fear, with hundreds killed or abducted.
One of the gravest incidents was the abduction of more than 300 students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, and St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Niger State.
While a number of the victims have either been rescued or escaped, many are still held captive, heightening pressure on security agencies and provoking national outrage.
France’s latest pledge adds to growing global concern over Nigeria’s worsening security landscape, with international partners increasingly urged to do more.
With communities still grieving and families awaiting the safe return of abducted students, Macron’s call for collective action underscores what analysts say is the need for stronger multinational cooperation to halt the spread of terror across the Sahel and West Africa.
