Founder of the One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has vowed to personally help secure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu — but only if agitators shut down Biafra Radio and end the sit-at-home directives crippling economic and social activities in the South-East.
Maharaj Ji made the declaration during an interview on his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday, warning that Kanu’s release would only be possible through “political settlement” and not agitation.
According to him, the IPOB leader was “lucky” to have escaped a death sentence despite being convicted on seven counts of terrorism charges.
“Anybody accused of terrorism faces a death sentence under the constitution. It is only by grace that Kanu escaped,” he said.
“For his pardon to be realistic, those advocating for him must take concrete steps. They must shut down Biafra Radio wherever it is operating and end the sit-at-home order. The judgment should be accepted, and Igbo elders must quietly engage the President.”
Maharaj Ji also accused some northern interests of being uncomfortable with the political relevance the Igbo now enjoy under President Bola Tinubu, urging leaders in the region to stop what he described as divisive propaganda.
“Today, the Igbos have been brought into the central realm of politics by Tinubu, and the Northern caliphate is not happy. They should stop the propaganda that the East is about to be Islamised,” he said.
“Once these issues are addressed, I know how to help. Kanu will come out. I will help facilitate his release.”
His comments come as political efforts intensify to free the separatist leader, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto correctional facility.
On Tuesday, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, visited President Tinubu at the State House after meeting Kanu in prison, a move widely interpreted as part of behind-the-scenes negotiations. Other southern leaders, including activist Omoyele Sowore, have also pushed for a political resolution.
Kanu was convicted of terrorism offences by Justice James Omotosho, who handed him a life sentence on counts one, two, four, five and six; 20 years on count three; and five years on count seven – all without options of fine.
Despite the grim sentences, Maharaj Ji insisted that “all hope is not lost” for the IPOB leader.
