Tragedy struck Amaji village in Umuoyoro community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday after a middle-aged man allegedly killed his wife during a disagreement on their farm.
The suspect, identified simply as Mr. Alachi, was arrested by operatives of the Eberi Division under the Oyigbo Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force shortly after the incident.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the couple had gone to their farm in Amaji village on February 19, 2026, when a minor argument reportedly ensued between them.
Community sources said the disagreement escalated into violence, during which the suspect allegedly used a kitchen knife to slit the throat of his wife, said to be a mother of two.
Residents working on nearby farms were said to have heard the woman’s screams and rushed to the scene.
“The cry for help attracted people from neighbouring farms. By the time they got there, she was already lying in a pool of blood,” a community source, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent.
The villagers reportedly overpowered the suspect and handed him over to security operatives.
The incident has thrown the quiet agrarian community into mourning, with residents expressing shock over what they described as an unprovoked and gruesome act.
A security source disclosed that during preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly claimed he did not know what came over him before committing the act.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure justice is served,” she said.
Meanwhile, a human rights advocate and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable.
He urged the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to guarantee justice for the deceased and adequate protection for her two children.
The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
