The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a 35-year-old single mother, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, and dated January 11, 2026.
According to the police, Chibuike was arrested on January 7, 2026, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, following discreet investigations into the killing, which occurred on December 9, 2025.
The command dismissed speculations that the woman was murdered by people to whom the suspect was indebted, describing the reports as false, misleading and inconsistent with findings from the investigation.
SP Ikenga said that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife around midnight on the day of the incident, leading to her death.
“According to the suspect’s confession, the act was allegedly committed over suspicion of infidelity,” the statement read.
The suspect was also said to have admitted that he became emotionally distressed after going bankrupt and turning into a chronic debtor while trying to establish a business for the victim, a situation that reportedly triggered the fatal confrontation.
Police investigators further revealed that Chibuike confessed to planting a fake letter suggesting he had been kidnapped by his creditors, an attempt aimed at misleading investigators and facilitating his escape after committing the crime.
As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited.
The police command noted that the incident has generated outrage within the community and reignited public concern over domestic violence and crimes arising from intimate relationships.
The command urged members of the public to embrace lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to promptly report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
SP Ikenga added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
