Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended Kayode Cole for issuing a death threat against the Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede.
The arrest took place in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Cole allegedly made the threatening remarks through his Instagram handle, “1billionsecretss,” in response to a story posted by popular Instagram blogger, Instablog9ja, on February 1, 2024.
Instablog9ja had shared a story titled “A Religious Sect Is Laundering Money for Terrorists. We Traced N7 Billion Fraud Proceeds to another Religious Group – EFCC Chairman,” prompting Cole to comment that the EFCC Chairman would be dead within six months.
During interrogation, Cole claimed that his statement was merely an attempt to gain attention, often referred to as “chasing clout.”
In response to the incident, EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, announced that Cole would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
This arrest follows revelations made by EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, during a dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption” held at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, where he disclosed the Commission’s findings regarding money laundering activities within religious sects in Nigeria.
