The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has uncovered a case of attempted drug smuggling into its custodial centers.

The Public Relations Officer of NCoS FCT Command, DSC Adamu Duza, issued a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He disclosed  the apprehension and subsequent arrest of a man identified as Fidelis Emmanuel for his involvement in the illicit activity.

According to Duza, diligent surveillance efforts by NCoS personnel at the Medium Security Custodial Center in Kuje led to the interception of drug peddlers.

Among them, Fidelis Emmanuel was apprehended with substances suspected to be cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp.

The arrest occurred during a routine visitation period when Emmanuel attempted to smuggle the illicit drugs concealed within a food flask intended for his incarcerated friend.

The discovery of the prohibited items hidden beneath the food flask prompted immediate action, with Emmanuel taken into custody by NCoS authorities.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Emmanuel had orchestrated the smuggling attempt with the intention of providing drugs to his friend within the correctional center.

In response to this alarming incident, Mr. John Francis, the Comptroller of the FCT Command, swiftly ordered that Emmanuel be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for appropriate legal action.

Additionally, Francis has instructed the implementation of enhanced security and surveillance measures across various custodial centers in the FCT to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Duza emphasized the need for heightened vigilance among custodial center officers to thwart attempts by individuals seeking to exploit visitation privileges for criminal purposes.

He urged genuine families and friends of inmates to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in combating drug abuse and ensuring the safety and rehabilitation of inmates.
