The Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, has sentenced 43-year-old Akinyemi Ojo to life imprisonment for attempting to murder a woman on a farm.
Ojo, who stood trial on a one-count charge of attempted murder, was arraigned before the court on January 25, 2023.
The charge stemmed from an incident on December 5, 2022, in Aramoko Ekiti, where Ojo allegedly attacked the victim, identified as David Faith, with a machete.
During the trial, the victim recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “While I was on the farm, I saw the man holding a cutlass and coming ferociously towards where I was.
I suspected his movement to be of evil agenda, and I then took to my heels. He gave me a chase, but when I fell, he inflicted machete cuts all over my body until I became unconscious.
“She further narrated how she regained consciousness and managed to crawl to the main road, where passersby came to her aid and transported her to the General Hospital in Aramoko Ekiti.
The victim expressed bewilderment at the motive behind the brutal attack.
The prosecution, led by Taiwo Ajibulu-Ariyo, presented five witnesses and tendered statements by both the defendant and the victim, as well as physical evidence including the machete and pictures of the victim’s injuries.
In contrast, the defendant chose to speak in his own defense through his legal representation and did not call any witnesses.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Blessing Ajileye emphasized the severity of the crime and the potential fatal consequences of the defendant’s actions.
“I found that the defendant macheted the victim, and the degree of injury inflicted on her was capable of causing her death, but for the intervening efforts of the passersby who saw her in a pool of blood,” stated Justice Ajileye.
Consequently, the court convicted Akinyemi Ojo as charged under Section 241 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
