A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Thursday, sentenced one Murtala Abdullahi to three years imprisonment for stealing electric wires worth N2.8 million
.
The suspect was arraigned for criminal conspiracy, trespass, and theft.
The court gave him a bail option of N50,000 for each offense or serve a jail term of one year for each offense.
In addition to the jail term, Chief Magistrate Munir Sani also ordered Abdullahi to pay compensation of N2.8 million to the nominal complainant.
The prosecution counsel, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that the suspect conspired with another person named Shehu (who is now at large) to steal the electric wires from the complainant’s house.
Tanko said that this act violated the provisions of sections 97, 348, and 287 of the Penal Code.
However, the Defense Counsel, Owobu Godday, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convict.
Godday stated that Abdullahi had no prior conviction record in Nigeria and was remorseful for his actions.
“The convict is a first-time offender. He did not stress the court but pleaded guilty to the offense
“Ordinarily, he is supposed to be in school but the social economy of the country has made him be out of school.
“While we do not support crime, we plead with the court to give him another chance to make amends.
“We plead with the court to sentence the convict with an option to pay a fine,” he said.
