Tension has gripped Ekeowe community in Southern ljaw Local Government Area ofBayelsa State following the death of a 47-year-old man, Emi Sigah, who was allegedly flogged to death over accusations of raping a 10-year-old girl.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident,which occurred on March 25, has sparkedprotests and heightened security presence inthe riverine community.
Residents alleged that Sigah attacked the minor in a bush while she was returning froma farm with her aunt.
In response, the community leadership, in accordance with local custom, ordered a penalty of 120 lashes consisting of 10 strokes from each of the villagers.
It was further gathered that some residents proposed the fine option of N15,000 and N50,000 in replacement of the the corporal punishment, but, was reportedly rejected by the majority of the community members who insisted on the enforcement of the traditional penalty.
Efforts to revive Sigah when he reportedly lost consciousness after receiving 40 strokes failed as he was confirmed dead on arrival at the community hospital .
Pandemonium broke out when the news if his death filtered into the community as youths took to the streets threatening violence.
It was gathered that security agencies were subsequently deployed in the community to prevent further violence .
When contacted, spokesperson of the Bayelsa police command, Musa Muhammed, said four suspects have been arrested.
He added that investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yenagoa..
