A brave and selfless father, Titus Adega, tragically lost his life while protecting his five-year-old son, Kizito, from a collapsed building in Akure.
Following the over 24 hours heavy rainfall in Akure, Ondo State, a heart-wrenching incident occurred that would leave the community in mourning.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the event took place at Itedo Eledumare Street, Oba-Ile, in Akure North Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, a section of the building’s wall collapsed, falling on Adega and his son during the torrential downpour.
A tenant in the collapsed bungalow, Elizabeth Columbus, recounted the distressing scene as she described how the back section of the building suddenly gave way, trapping Adega and Kizito beneath the rubble.
The wife of the deceased, Margaret Adega narrated the heartrending moment she found her husband and son.
Despite her efforts to rescue them, it was clear that her husband had shielded their son from harm, demonstrating an incredible act of parental love and protection.
She said: “I heard the loud cry of my son from deep in my sleep and I rushed outside to discover him under the rubble of the collapsed wall of the building.
“I tried to extricate him and discovered the unconscious body of my husband on top of him. I believe my husband used his body to protect our son when the wall fell.
However, she explained that on getting to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, her husband was declared dead while her son, who had a fracture on the leg and slight bruises on the face, was receiving treatment.
“We were asked to take them to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital but when we got there he was confirmed dead on arrival.”
The widow explained further how her son was immediately discharged from hospital, while her husband’s corpse would be taken to Benue State for burial.
It was further gathered that the rainfall wreaked havoc on other parts of Oba-Ile and the Airport road, causing floods that submerged buildings and destroyed personal properties and fences.
