In a tragic incident that unfolded in Aduma ward, Mkpani, Cross River, a dispute over a wrap of marijuana turned deadly on Christmas Eve.

A man simply identified as Mkpor, having purchased the illicit substance from his friend, Tunde, allegedly hacked him to death with a machete.

The incident took place in Yakkur Local Government Area, situated about 120 kilometers from Calabar.

According to reports, the disagreement arose when Mkpor refused to pay Tunde for the purchased marijuana, leading to a heated verbal exchange.

The conflict escalated when Mkpor, a known troublemaker at Tunde’s marijuana-selling “bunk,” smoked a wrap of the weed without settling the debt. In response, Tunde banned Mkpor from visiting the bunk again.

Expressing his frustration, Mkpor reportedly threatened to kill Tunde whenever he encountered him outside the bunk.

Tragically, this threat materialized on a Wednesday afternoon when Tunde went to the new market. Mkpor followed him, launching a sudden attack by throwing a large stone at Tunde’s forehead. Subsequently,

Mkpor allegedly wielded a machete, severing Tunde’s right hand, and causing him to bleed to death.

The shocking incident incited the anger of the community’s youth, who reportedly retaliated by setting Mkpor’s family house ablaze.

Responding to the escalating tensions, Ms. Irene Ugbo, spokesperson for the Cross River Police Command, announced the deployment of anti-riot policemen to the area in an effort to restore normalcy.

The tragic clash serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences arising from disputes, even within the realm of illicit activities.

The Cross River Police Command remains actively involved in addressing the aftermath and ensuring that justice prevails in the wake of this disturbing incident.
