A Kaduna-based businessman, Haruna Adamu, has urged the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court to intervene and compel his estranged wife, Salamatu Abubakar, to either return to their matrimonial home or refund the bride price paid during their marriage.
Expressing financial constraints, Adamu on Thursday, made a heartfelt appeal, stating, “If my wife is not willing to return to me, she should refund the bride price I paid to her parents.”
Adamu elaborated on the circumstances surrounding their union, highlighting that he met Abubakar as a divorcee and decided to marry her.
However, the marriage, which initially brought two months of happiness, turned tumultuous, prompting Abubakar to relocate to her parents’ residence.
In an effort to maintain ties, Adamu shared that for the past six months, he has been sending financial support and foodstuff to his estranged wife while she resides with her parents.
Reflecting on the short-lived peace in their eight-month marriage, he expressed, “I married her as a divorcee, and in the eight months of our marriage, I only enjoyed two months of peace. I love my wife, and I want her back.
“But if she’s not willing to return home, then she should pay me off so that I can remarry because I don’t have money to marry another woman.”
In response, Abubakar revealed that she left the matrimonial home due to alleged physical abuse by Adamu.
She further asserted that her estranged husband displayed a lack of empathy towards her sick mother.
Opting for an alternative resolution, she expressed a willingness to refund the N75,000 dowry paid to her parents instead of returning to the matrimonial home.
The presiding Judge, Malam Isiyaku Abdulrahman, adjourned the matter to January 17 for further hearing.
The delay is intended to allow the complainant to present a comprehensive list of claimed items and evidence of the money allegedly spent on the respondent.
This case unfolds against the backdrop of domestic turmoil, shedding light on the complexities surrounding marriage disputes within the cultural and legal context.
