The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced that Shaibu Yusuf, the man who climbed a broadcast mast in Abuja to protest economic hardship, will face prosecution if he is found mentally stable.
Yusuf had on Monday, drawn attention when he scaled the broadcast mast belonging to Aso Radio and Television in the Katampe area of Abuja.
His dramatic protest was aimed at highlighting the severe economic challenges, insecurity, and the crisis of out-of-school children in the country.
Yusuf had also left a note on the ground before he climbed the last, declaring that he would only come down if these pressing issues were addressed.
The tense situation was defused after several minutes of negotiation led by Florence Wenegieme, the acting General Manager of the FCT Emergency Management Department.
Wenegieme assured Yusuf that his concerns would be communicated to the relevant authorities, prompting him to descend safely from the mast.
Following his descent, Yusuf was taken into custody by the FCT police.
Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed that Yusuf was in stable condition.
On Tuesday, Adeh provided an update, stating that Yusuf had been sent to the FCT Social Development Secretariat for a mental evaluation.
“If found mentally stable after the test, he will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement,” Adeh said.
These charges are based on sections 231, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act.
Section 231 of the Penal Code Act stipulates: “Whoever attempts to commit suicide and does any act towards the commission of such offence, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with a fine or with both.”
This highlights the seriousness with which the authorities view Yusuf’s actions.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the desperate measures some Nigerians are willing to take to draw attention to their plight.
