Graduating with a first-class degree is a remarkable achievement, and for Mary Morayo James, it was a journey marked by hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance.
In this interview with KOREDE BADMUS, Mary shares her experiences, challenges, and the strategies that helped her attain academic excellence.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey toward earning a first-class degree in English and Literary Studies?
My name is Mary Morayo James, and I recently graduated with a first-class degree in English and Literary Studies from the Federal University Oye-Ekiti.
My journey to achieving this milestone was driven by a strong desire to transform my family’s narrative and make my sponsors proud.
Additionally, my passion for the English language inspired me to explore the works of various English-speaking authors.
I devoted countless hours to reading, writing, and engaging in thought-provoking discussions that broadened my perspectives.
The support from my lecturers and friends was instrumental in my success, and I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment.Although it was a challenging journey, I am grateful to God for this achievement.
What was your CGPA upon graduation?
My CGPA upon graduation was 4.50/5.0.
What motivated you to study English and Literary Studies? Did you always aim for a first-class degree?
Honestly, English and Literary Studies wasn’t my dream course, but I believe it was part of a bigger plan for me. My family motivated me to study the course, and along the way, I developed a genuine love for grammar.
I always aimed for a first-class degree, but there were moments when I doubted if I could achieve it.
Were there any particular courses you found challenging? How did you handle them?
Yes, Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics was particularly challenging. We were at home during the period it was taught, and I found it difficult to grasp the concepts from textbooks.
The more I read, the more confused I became. The course was taught online, and I struggled to understand some of the complex concepts.
I managed to overcome this challenge by attending tutorials when I returned to school, seeking help from senior colleagues, and watching YouTube videos that simplified the concepts.
What study techniques or habits helped you maintain academic excellence throughout your four years?
I can’t say I had one specific study technique. However, a structured study schedule played a big role in my success.
I gathered materials from senior colleagues and always read ahead of classes with my roommate. I also actively participated in class discussions, which reinforced my understanding of the subjects.
Additionally, YouTube became my best friend, and I tutored my coursemates on tricky topics, which helped me grasp difficult concepts better.
You were the class governor from 100 to 400 level.
How did you manage the responsibilities that came with that position?
Honestly, it was quite a journey! Initially, I felt overwhelmed when I first took on the role, but by my second year, I found my rhythm. I made it a priority to balance my leadership responsibilities with my studies. Effective communication, delegation, and time management were key. I delegated tasks to my classmates, which helped lighten the workload and made everything run smoothly. I’m grateful to God for the supportive people who played significant roles during this period.
Were there moments when you doubted yourself? How did you push through difficult times?
Yes, I faced moments of self-doubt and uncertainty. To overcome these challenges, I reflected on my strengths and accomplishments, sought guidance from mentors, trusted lecturers, and senior colleagues, and practiced self-compassion. I also reminded myself of my goals and why I was working toward them.
Did you have mentors, friends, or lecturers who played an important role in your journey?
Yes. By the grace of God, I was fortunate to have a supportive network of mentors, friends, and lecturers who played a significant role in my academic and personal growth. They offered guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback, helping me navigate challenges and celebrate successes.
Looking back, what was the biggest sacrifice you had to make to achieve your first-class degree?
Reflecting on that time, I would say the most significant sacrifice I made was prioritizing my business over my health, especially during the colder months. There were nights when I would close my shop at 11 PM, while my fellow students were resting.
I spent those late hours outside selling akara, driven by the need to make ends meet. It was a challenging balance, but it ultimately contributed to my growth and determination to graduate with first-class honours.
What advice would you give to students who aspire to graduate with a first-class while balancing multiple responsibilities?
My advice to such students is to seek God’s direction, stay motivated, and remain focused. Discover your unique study style and approach. Additionally, create a structured timetable to balance academic and personal responsibilities. Maintain equilibrium between all aspects of your life. By following these tips and staying organized, focused, and committed, you can achieve academic excellence and set yourself up for success.
If you could change anything about your university experience, what would it be?
If I could change anything, I would have liked to explore more extracurricular activities and hobbies outside my academic and leadership responsibilities. I never had the time to attend my departmental outings. While I was focused on achieving my goals, I sometimes felt that I missed out on other aspects of university life.
Do you have any final thoughts you’d like to leave with our audience?
My final words to the audience: Stay committed, resilient, and true to yourself. Celebrate your successes, learn from your setbacks, and remember that your journey is unique. Surround yourself with supportive people, prioritize your well-being, and keep pushing forward.
