Tension remains high within the Lagos State House of Assembly, as lawmakers have revealed that deep-seated anger still simmers in the legislative chamber.
They stated that it would be challenging for the assembly to function the same way it did prior to the recent leadership crisis.
This follows the controversial reinstatement of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, whose removal earlier this year sparked a series of heated disputes and party interventions.
While Obasa returned to his position on Monday after the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, the embers of discontent have yet to be extinguished.
A member of the assembly, speaking anonymously, disclosed that many lawmakers are still reeling from the events that led to Obasa’s return.
“We are still waiting for him to honour the agreement with the Baba Akande-led committee that was made to ensure peace and progress within the House.
Before his return, there was an atmosphere of calm and cooperation, but that peace now seems a distant memory,” the lawmaker said.
Despite a report earlier this week claiming a reconciliation meeting took place between Obasa and the lawmakers, members of the assembly have firmly denied it.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, was described by several lawmakers as anything but a conciliatory session.
They emphasized that the gathering focused primarily on the suspended Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, and the legal case against the assembly.
“Contrary to what has been reported, there was no reconciliation.
The meeting, which was initially scheduled for 1 pm, did not commence until 2:30 pm. When Obasa finally arrived, there was no apology for the delay,” one lawmaker recounted.
“Instead, he quickly moved on to the meeting’s agenda, barely acknowledging the frustration we were all feeling.
He even acknowledged that we were still upset over the way we were pressured into reinstating him.”
Another lawmaker confirmed the details, further stating that the meeting’s sole focus was to address the ongoing legal issue involving the suspended Clerk.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) has been brought in, and some of our colleagues have even been arrested. That was the focus of the meeting.
“It lasted only a few minutes, and once it was over, we all left,” the lawmaker said.
The feelings of discontent and frustration are palpable among members, with some openly expressing their reluctance to accept Obasa’s leadership.
“His return was not a decision made with our full support,” one lawmaker emphasized. “It was only because we have respect for leaders like Baba Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba. Deep down, we never wanted him back in that position.”
