In a significant operation, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry has intercepted a smuggling syndicate, confiscating 27 bags of suspected Cannabis sativa with a street value estimated at N35 million.
During an official handover ceremony of the seized narcotics to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Special Area Command, Navy Captain Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Commanding Officer of Nigerian Navy FOB Badagry, revealed the details of the operation.
Acting on intelligence received on Friday, September 2023, the Nigerian Navy FOB Badagry swiftly responded to a report of suspected smuggling activities.
A boat was spotted unloading the illicit substances near Pako Beach, close to Ajido, within the FOB Badagry Area of Operations.
Adams-Aliu explained, “The Base Quick Response Team, led by the Base Operations Officer and the Base Intelligence Officer, immediately proceeded to the scene for investigation and possible arrests. Upon arrival, the smugglers abandoned the narcotics and fled.”
While investigations are ongoing to identify the drug trafficking syndicate, Adams-Aliu noted that no other contraband or suspects were found in the nearby communities.
The Nigerian Navy is working in collaboration with other security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
Commander of Narcotics and the Area Commander, Seme Area Command, Dinneys Fingere Owen, expressed gratitude for the efforts of Adams-Aliu and emphasized that investigations will commence to apprehend and prosecute the culprits.
Owen also highlighted the NDLEA’s commitment to collaborate with sister agencies and conduct awareness campaigns through initiatives like the War Against Drugs Abuse (WADA) to combat drug abuse.
