MAY DAY CELEBRATION: Massive Turnout Shows Workers Are Appreciative, Says Delta NLC Chairman

The Chairman of the Delta state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Chief Goodluck Ofobruku has said that the massive turnout by the Nigeria Labour Union, and its affiliates have shown that they are appreciative of what the government has done for them.

The state NLC Chairman revealed this during the 2023 Workers Day celebration, theme,” Workers Rights and Social-Economic Justice” in Asaba the state capital.

He noted that workers are celebrating the state government today ( May 1st, 2023) for what it has been doing for the workers for the past 8 years, and also thanked the Governor for the promises he kept.

He added that Delta workers should look for more government cooperation,  solidarity and for more government approvals of the NLC request.

He clarified that the issue of workers’ wages and salaries is the federal government that will legislate on it, saying until legislation is made and tenably circular, the NLC cannot talk of salary at the state level.

He disclosed that the condition of service, and other aspects of the welfare of workers in the state government is doing absolutely well, pointing out some different laudable achievements by the government ranging from a conducive working environment for workers to low-cost housing for workers in the state.

He maintained that there is every reason for the state workers to rejoice and likewise exercise patience with the government, noting that he is optimistic that the state government will take workers and NLC to the promised land.

Earlier in a joint speech delivered by the state NLC chairman, reads in part “It is a pleasant reality that workers are celebrating the third May – Day with unrestricted attendance after that of 2020 which was plagued by Covid-19. We welcome all in attendance.

“On behalf of Delta State workers represented by the teaming comrades here present, we thank God for seeing us through the much feared and long-awaited 2023 Elections.”

“We formally congratulate your Excellency, the Governor-elect and the PDP on the success you earned during the last Governorship Election in Delta State which in a few days will relocate the Hon. Speaker RT. Hon Sheriff Francis Oborevwori from Delta State House of Assembly complex to Osadebe House. Again Congratulations.”

“The Theme of the 2023 May Day celebration is Workers’ Rights and Socio-Economic Justice. This theme is apt because it befits the unequalled performance of the incumbent Governor Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa in workers’ welfare and human capital development which characterized his 8- year surgeon as the Executive Governor of Delta State.”

“2023 Workers Day Celebration is significant because it is the 8″ and last celebration Organized Labour will have together with the Labour-friendly Road Master, His Excellency Senator (Dr.) Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa (CON) as Governor of Delta State.”

“Hence we in Organized Labour Celebrate with mixed feelings. Consequent upon the fact that His Excellency the incumbent Governor will be leaving office in a few days, we deemed it fit to limit the 2023 May Day speech to a reflection of our robust relationship with the Governor which will translate into appreciating the Governor rather than reeling out a litany of demands before a man who has done so much and will be leaving office very soon. Good deeds of Okowa to workers during his tenure”.
