No fewer than 148 terrorists were neutralised in a week-long military operation across multiple theatres in Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters disclosed on Saturday.
The operations, which also led to the arrest of 258 suspects, included the apprehension of two suspected terrorist ammunition couriers, Danweri and Abubakar Hamza, in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, revealed the details in a statement, highlighting the military’s efforts in combating terrorism and other criminal activities.
“During the week, troops in the North Central theatre of operation intercepted and apprehended two ammunition couriers collaborating with terrorists in Bauchi State.
These suspects, identified as Danweri and Abubakar Hamza, are currently cooperating with troops,” Buba said.
He added that in addition to the terrorist casualties, troops successfully rescued 291 kidnapped victims and recovered 146 assorted weapons alongside 2,599 rounds of ammunition.
In the South-South region, the military intensified its crackdown on oil theft, arresting 51 suspects and recovering crude oil valued at approximately N798 million.
Buba noted, “Troops discovered and destroyed 68 crude oil cooking ovens, 13 dugout pits, 41 boats, 45 storage tanks, and 66 illegal refining sites.
Other items recovered include four speedboats, one pumping machine, 150 drums, a generator, two motorcycles, two mobile phones, a drone, and five vehicles. Troops recovered 657,470 litres of stolen crude oil, 127,870 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 5,000 litres of DPK.”
Providing an update on the military’s overall operations from January to December 5, 2024, Buba stated that a total of 8,034 terrorists were neutralised, while 11,623 suspects were arrested.
During this period, crude oil worth over N57 billion was recovered, and 6,376 kidnapped victims were rescued.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and stability across the country, urging citizens to support the military by providing timely and credible information.
“This feat underscores the resolve of the Armed Forces to ensure the safety of lives and property, while dismantling criminal networks operating within the country,” the statement added.
