Some retired military personnel on Tuesday staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding the immediate payment of their long-overdue entitlements.
The protesters, who blocked the ministry’s entrance with canopies and chairs, carried placards highlighting their grievances.
Their demands included the settlement of palliatives promised between October 2023 and November 2024, a N32,000 increase in pensions, the payment of a lump sum for the security debarment allowance, and the refund of pension deductions for soldiers discharged on medical grounds.
This demonstration comes weeks after a similar protest in December 2024, during which the pensioners also shut down the ministry over the government’s failure to honor their claims.
In response to the December protest, the federal government had paid 50 percent of the outstanding entitlements and assured the retirees that the remaining balance would be paid soon.
However, the retirees claim the government has failed to fulfill its commitment, leaving them with no choice but to return to the streets to press home their demands.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the ministry regarding the protest.
