Military Will Not Accept Calls for Coup, Affirms Defence Chief

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has  stated that the Nigerian military will not tolerate any attempts to incite or execute a coup.

The reinforces  the nation’s commitment to democracy.

General Musa made this declaration on Monday during a press briefing with State House correspondents, following the National Security Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

His stern warning was directed at those agitating for a change in government, emphasising the military’s unwavering dedication to the democratic process.

“Also, the issue of coups, Nigeria is a sovereign nation, Nigeria is a democratic nation,” General Musa asserted.

He added “all security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure that democracy continues to strive.

“ We will not accept anyone pushing or taking any action, seemingly or for whatever reason, to want to push for any change of government. Democracy is what we stand for. Democracy is what we will continue to defend.”

Highlighting recent incidents, General Musa condemned activities that undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty, including the display of foreign symbols.

“We’ve said that clearly that the military is going to step in when it is out of hand, and you can see that for people supervising elements to push individuals to carry Russian flags in Nigeria, Nigeria sovereignty, that is crossing the red line and we will not accept that.

“And those who have done that will go in for the books, and they want to be prosecuted,” he warned.

The Defence Chief’s comments come amidst increasing global concerns over coups and undemocratic transitions of power in several regions.

General Musa’s firm stance shows the Nigerian military’s role in safeguarding the nation’s democratic institutions against internal and external threats.

The National Security Council meeting, led by President Tinubu, addressed various security challenges facing the nation.

The President and security chiefs deliberated on strategies to enhance the country’s security architecture, ensuring the safety and stability of the nation.
