The Minister of State for Health and Welfare, Tunde Alausa, has issued a heartfelt plea to the 416 foreign-trained medical graduates who were recently inducted on Thursday, by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in Abuja.
Alausa, represented by his Special Adviser, Ismaila Adiatu, encouraged these doctors not to leave the country in pursuit of opportunities abroad.
During the induction ceremony, Alausa assured the new doctors that efforts would be made to create an enabling environment for them to practice, with a commitment to improving infrastructure, salary, and overall working conditions.
This appeal is a response to the ongoing challenge of medical professionals leaving Nigeria, resulting in a concerning patient-doctor ratio within the country’s health sector.
Adiatu emphasized, “Don’t ‘japa.’ Stay behind and contribute to your country. We are dedicated to providing an environment where you can practice with satisfaction. Infrastructure, conditions, and salaries will be enhanced.
Please don’t leave; stay behind for your parents, relatives, and to prevent the field from being dominated by unqualified practitioners.”
In addition to Alausa’s plea, the guest lecturer, Prof Christie Mato, acting Vice Chancellor of Pamo University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, underscored the significant responsibilities associated with the title of medical doctor.
Mato highlighted the importance of humility in the behavior of medical professionals, urging the inductees to demonstrate respect and sensitivity towards both patients and colleagues.
The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Tajudeen Sanusi, in his remarks, stressed the importance of compassion in the medical profession.
He urged the new doctors to be prepared to practice medicine anywhere in the country while emphasizing their commitment to ongoing learning and development.
