The Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has denied accusations that he directed telecommunications companies in Nigeria to tamper with network services as nationwide protests began on Thursday.
Amidst growing unrest, Nigerians using major telecom providers such as MTN and Airtel took to social media to voice their frustrations over unusually slow internet speeds.
These disruptions led to widespread speculation that the Tinubu administration had instructed telecom companies to interfere with network services to hinder the protests.
Addressing these concerns during an interview on Channels TV, the Minister denied the allegations, stating, “There’s no instruction to tamper with (phone) networks.”
PLATFORM TIMES reports that his statement aims to quell the suspicions and assure the public that the government has not engaged in any such activities.
Earlier in the day, Tijani had expressed his dismay over the looting of the National Communication Commission (NCC) building in Kano State.
He condemned the act, highlighting its negative impact on the federal government’s initiatives to boost youth employment through technology.
“The destruction of such critical infrastructure is a setback to our efforts in promoting digital innovation and employment for our youth,” Tijani remarked.
The protests, driven by various social and economic grievances, have seen significant participation from citizens across the country.
