A retired archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, Professor Godwin Okpala, who was declared missing nearly a month ago, has resurfaced alongside his driver.
Okpala and his driver went missing on December 6, 2024, during a journey to Umuchu in Anambra State..
The incident, announced by the Anglican Church, sparked widespread speculation of an abduction by kidnappers.
The cleric broke his silence early Thursday, confirming his return with a brief but powerful statement on his Facebook page: “Praise The Lord!”
The post immediately attracted an outpouring of joy and relief from members of the public, with many expressing gratitude for his safe return.
Hours later, the Anglican Church formally confirmed the development, celebrating the safe return of the cleric and his driver.
“The church and the wider community are rejoicing over the safe return of Archbishop Godwin Okpala and his driver, a testament to the power of faith, prayer, and community solidarity,” the church announced via its official Facebook page.
The church also used the opportunity to call for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s policing system, particularly in addressing the escalating threats of abductions and violence in the South-East region.
“This incident underscores the need for police reforms and the implementation of state and community policing systems to ensure the safety of lives and properties,” the statement read.
The church emphasized the importance of strengthening security measures, urging the government to prioritize peace and security in the region.
