A food vendor identified simply as Amaye has been lynched and set ablaze by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, over alleged blasphemous comments against Prophet Muhammad.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, after the woman allegedly made remarks considered offensive during a heated exchange with a customer at her restaurant.
Eyewitnesses said the customer had jokingly proposed marriage to her, citing the tradition of the Prophet, when she allegedly made the statement that triggered outrage.
Amaye was reportedly taken to the palace of the district head, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation.
However, the situation quickly escalated as an angry mob overpowered the security personnel and lynched her before setting her body on fire.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said reinforcement teams were deployed but arrived too late to save the woman.
“On 30/8/2025 at about 2pm, a report was received indicating that one Amaye, a female of Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga LGA, made some comments against the Islamic Prophet.
Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and she was set ablaze before reinforcement could reach the scene,” Abiodun said.
The police spokesperson added that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest those involved in the killing, stressing that the suspects would be investigated and prosecuted.
The killing has once again reignited debates on religious tolerance and mob justice in Nigeria, with rights activists warning that failure to prosecute perpetrators of such killings encourages further lawlessness.
