Three suspected motorcycle thieves were lynched on Sunday night after an angry mob attacked and set ablaze a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) outpost in Danmaje, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
The suspects, whose identities were yet to be ascertained as of press time, were reportedly apprehended by residents of Yansango community in an area known for frequent motorcycle theft and handed over to the NSCDC outpost at about 10:30pm.
However, before civil defence officers could commence investigations, the situation degenerated as a large mob drawn from several neighbouring communities stormed the facility, demanding that the suspects be released to them.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Kano State Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, SC Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the mob comprised residents from Yansango, Madinawa, Gagarawa, Limawa, Yankatsari, Danmaje and Gurjiya communities.
Abdullahi explained that the crowd cordoned off the outpost, overpowered officers on duty and forcefully gained access to the premises.
“The mob reportedly set the outpost on fire and lynched the three suspects before reinforcements could arrive,” he said.
He added that although officers on duty narrowly escaped death, three NSCDC personnel sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack and were currently receiving medical treatment.
The NSCDC spokesperson disclosed that the State Commandant, acting on the directive of the Commandant-General of the corps, had constituted a committee of inquiry to conduct a full-scale investigation into the violent incident.
According to him, the committee is expected to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify those responsible and ensure that all perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
The corps also appealed to residents of the affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.Abdullahi warned members of the public against resorting to jungle justice, stressing that mob action undermines the rule of law and poses grave danger to lives and property, including those of security personnel.
He reiterated the commitment of the NSCDC to protecting critical national assets and maintaining law and order, urging citizens to always allow security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
