MTN Nigeria has issued an apology following widespread criticism over its recent decision to hike data prices by 200%.
The telecommunications giant initially increased the cost of its 15GB digital bundle from N2,000 to N6,000, attributing the move to a broader tariff adjustment in line with regulatory approvals.
In a statement addressing the uproar, MTN acknowledged the mistake, admitting that the abrupt price hike had upset many of its customers.
“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know,” the statement read, reflecting the company’s recognition of customer dissatisfaction.
“We could share several reasons, and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake,” MTN continued, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.
Despite initially reverting the price to its original rate of N2,000, subsequent checks revealed that MTN had raised the cost again to N6,500 for the same 15GB bundle, now shifted from a weekly to a monthly subscription model.
MTN’s tariff adjustments came shortly after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a request from telecom operators to revise prices, marking the first official review since 2013.
This move occurred despite directives from the House of Representatives urging the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to suspend a 50% tariff hike approval.
In the spirit of the ongoing love season, MTN appealed to customers for forgiveness and understanding, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a positive customer relationship.
The company assured subscribers that efforts would be made to continually demonstrate appreciation and support.
