Muhammed Babangida, son of Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd), has officially accepted his appointment as the chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), describing earlier reports of his rejection as false and malicious.
President Bola Tinubu had, on July 18, appointed Babangida to head the apex agricultural finance institution, in what was described as a strategic move to reposition the bank for improved performance.
However, shortly after the announcement, a wave of reports emerged across several platforms alleging that Babangida had declined the offer — claims he has now firmly denied.
In a statement issued on Monday by Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Babangida expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust reposed in him.
“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, as announced by the Federal Government, and extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him,” the statement read.
Babangida further dismissed the viral reports of his alleged rejection as a coordinated campaign to mislead the public and discredit the presidency’s reform efforts.
Describing the claims as “false and malicious,” the statement warned that those behind the fake news would be identified and prosecuted.
“We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity within our nation,” the statement added.
Olusegun reiterated that Babangida’s appointment is part of a broader set of strategic leadership changes aimed at revitalizing key government institutions to deliver on their mandates.
The presidency also urged Nigerians to rely on credible news sources for verified information and to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims.
The Bank of Agriculture, under Babangida’s leadership, is expected to play a pivotal role in driving food security and supporting Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda.
