The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate from the Labour Party, and other critics of the government’s plan to acquire new aircraft for the presidential fleet, of harbouring malicious intentions towards President Bola Tinubu.
The accusation was made in a statement signed by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
MURIC’s allegations come in response to comments made by Peter Obi on June 17, 2024, where he criticized the federal government’s intention to purchase new planes for the presidency.
Akintola suggested that Obi’s opposition to the new aircraft stems from a desire to see harm come to the president, referencing recent tragic aviation accidents as a backdrop for their claims.
MURIC highlighted recent incidents such as the crash of a Malawi Defence Force aircraft carrying the country’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.
Akintola implied that Obi and other critics wished for similar misfortunes to befall President Tinubu.
“Peter Obi’s body language since the declaration of the results of the 2023 presidential elections has exposed him as a bitter politician and a bad loser who cannot come to terms with the reality of his defeat,” the statement read.
“Obi is a Trumpist who will go to any length to bring disaster to his perceived political enemies.”
The group also called on the National Assembly to disregard criticisms against the acquisition of new aircraft, stressing that the current presidential jets are outdated and pose significant risks.
The group cited multiple incidents where President Tinubu and Vice President Kazim Shettima faced travel disruptions due to mechanical failures of the existing presidential planes.
“One instance involved President Tinubu having to continue his journey on a commercial flight after two presidential jets broke down simultaneously.
“Another incident on May 7, 2024, forced Vice President Shettima to cancel a trip to the US-Africa Business Summit due to a jet malfunction shortly after takeoff.”
