The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised concerns over the reported disbursement of nearly ₦2 billion to each senator for constituency projects, calling on federal lawmakers from the state to publicly account for the funds.
The call follows a viral video in which a serving member of the House of Representatives revealed that senators now receive close to ₦2 billion each under the current budget cycle for constituency projects—a development that has sparked widespread debate over transparency in governance.
In a statement signed by its State Chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Tajudeen Alao, and made available to PLATFORM TIMES by the State Secretary, Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, MURIC questioned the utilisation of the funds by Ogun State’s three senators and nine House of Representatives members.
“With this level of funding, the people deserve to know: What are our senators and representatives doing with the money?
Where are the projects? Who are the beneficiaries? What impact has been made in the lives of average citizens?” the group queried.
The organisation acknowledged the performance of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), representing Ogun West, stating that he had delivered impactful projects across infrastructure, education, health, security, and empowerment within his first two years in office.
According to MURIC, Senator Adeola’s initiatives have visibly transformed his senatorial district and set a benchmark for effective representation.
However, the group expressed concern over what it described as “uneven impact” among other lawmakers, demanding answers to whether all legislators receive equal allocations and, if so, why performance varies significantly.
“Is this a case of non-performance, poor media visibility, or lack of transparency?” MURIC asked. “This is not about politics or religion. It is about justice, transparency, probity, and accountability.”
While commending Senator Adeola, the Islamic human rights organisation urged him to ensure that his development efforts cut across all communities in Ogun West, irrespective of political affiliations.
“True development must be inclusive and equitable to uplift the entire senatorial district,” the group added.
MURIC also praised Hon. Afolabi Moruf Afuape, representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, for his track record in areas such as road rehabilitation, classroom construction, healthcare outreach, and economic empowerment.
Nonetheless, the group appealed to him to ensure that the benefits of his programmes reach beyond party lines and into the general population.
The organisation called on other senators and members of the House of Representatives in Ogun State to emulate the few who have shown commitment and transparency.
“We urge the media and civil society to join us in asking questions. Constituents have the right to see and feel the impact of ₦2 billion meant for their communities,” MURIC said.
