The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently revisit and complete abandoned projects initiated by his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, warning that the neglect of such projects is worsening insecurity and road accidents in the state.
The group, in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Jimoh, and secretary, Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed, said projects embarked upon with taxpayers’ money are the democratic rights of the people and not privileges that can be discarded at will.
MURIC identified several roads within Abeokuta that have become “death traps” due to abandonment, including Oke Ibukun, Aladesanmi Road, Adatan–Moore Junction, Elega Junction, and Mokola Road.
According to the group, many lives have been lost while others have sustained permanent injuries from accidents on those roads.
“We acknowledge the complexity of governance and the numerous commitments of government to development, but we are deeply worried that insecurity and accidents are on the rise as a result of these neglected projects,” the statement read.
MURIC stressed that its appeal was not for the benefit of Muslims alone but for the welfare of all residents of Ogun State.
It warned against governance driven by political vendetta or the advice of sycophants, urging Governor Abiodun to personally assess the state of abandoned projects rather than relying solely on aides and party loyalists.
“Governance is about humanity and continuity, not bitterness or political revenge. We strongly advise His Excellency not to rely solely on advisers, praise singers, and party loyalists whose interests may be self-serving. Moving around personally will give the people renewed hope and confidence in his administration,” MURIC added.
Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government,” the group reminded the Abiodun administration of its constitutional duty to protect lives and promote the welfare of citizens.
While urging the governor to act swiftly, MURIC also called on Ogun residents to continue to support and pray for the state government rather than curse leaders.
“A responsible citizen should not curse or abuse government officials, for they are the drivers of our collective destiny.
“Just as no one would curse a pilot flying them on an eight-hour journey, so also should we offer prayers and support for our leaders,” the statement concluded.
