On this day of remembrance for the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) is calling on the government to revisit his policies and programmes as a source of inspiration to address the current socio-economic challenges in Nigeria.
Dr. Aisha Muhammad-Oyebode, CEO of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, in a statement commemorating the 48th anniversary of Gen. Muhammed’s death, stressed the importance of reexamining the policies of the former administration.
She urged the implementation of those relevant to addressing the current challenges faced by Nigerians.
The first 200 days of Gen. Muhammed’s administration in 1975/76 witnessed significant improvements in the socio-economic situation, bringing relief and hope to citizens.
Unfortunately, progress was interrupted by the unsuccessful coup of February 13, 1976, led by the late Buka Suka Dimka.
Gen. Muhammed’s legacy is remembered for his detribalized, bold, and authentic leadership marked by economic prosperity and anti-corruption efforts. Despite past achievements, Nigeria currently faces the threat of socio-economic collapse.
Expressing concern over prevailing hardships, Dr. Muhammed-Oyebode called on the government to take urgent measures to restore socio-economic prosperity, echoing the successes of the Muhammad-Obasanjo military regime in the 1975/76 period.
She emphasized the urgent need for positive change, citing Gen. Muhammed’s successful efforts to combat indiscipline, promote nationalism, and address bureaucratic inefficiency while initiating the process for a return to civilian rule.
The MMF CEO stated, “Gen. Muhammed’s administration made significant strides in fighting corruption, relocating the federal capital to Abuja, and reforming economic inefficiency.
The government has the potential to replicate these achievements, particularly in economic prosperity, drawing inspiration from Gen. Muhammed’s vision.”
The MMF advocates renewed efforts to combat illiteracy, poverty, and sustainable economic development.
“By embracing Gen. Muhammed’s principles, the government can pave the way for a prosperous Nigeria that resonates with its citizens’ aspirations and contributes to a more prosperous Africa.
“As we commemorate the legacy of Gen. Murtala Muhammed, let us draw strength and inspiration from his achievements to chart a path towards a brighter future for Nigeria.
“It is our hope that the government will heed this call and take concrete steps to revitalize the economy in line with the ideals of our late Head of State,” she concluded.
