The Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as Eid-el-Fitr, following the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon across Nigeria.
The announcement, which marks the end of the 2026 Ramadan fast, was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee.
According to the statement signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Sambo Wali Junaidu, there were no verified reports of the new moon from sighting committees nationwide on the 29th day of Ramadan, corresponding to March 18, 2026.
“In accordance with Islamic injunctions, when the new moon is not sighted on the 29th day of the lunar month, Muslims are to complete 30 days of fasting,” the statement read.
It added that Thursday, March 19, 2026, would be observed as the 30th day of Ramadan, making Friday, March 20, 2026, the first day of Shawwal 1447AH and the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, urged Muslims to sustain the virtues imbibed during Ramadan and continue to pray for the peace, unity, and progress of the country.
He congratulated the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the holy month and prayed for the acceptance of their acts of worship.
The statement further conveyed the Sultan’s goodwill message, wishing Muslims across Nigeria a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
