The Nigerian Air Force has said its fighter jets have killed several senior terrorist commanders and destroyed key insurgent infrastructure during coordinated airstrikes in the Sambisa Forest, Borno State.
The operation, conducted under the Joint Task Force of Operation Hadin Kai, targeted identified terrorist enclaves in the Yuwe general area of the Sambisa Forest axis on February 28, 2026.
In a statement on Monday, the NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the mission was intelligence-driven and followed days of surveillance.
He explained that confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance flights had earlier uncovered structures believed to be hideouts for top commanders as well as logistics warehouses used to store weapons and other supplies.
According to him, the air component executed a precision Air Interdiction mission, striking the targets with “overwhelming force” and successfully dismantling critical terrorist facilities.
“Post-strike battle damage assessments, backed by credible intelligence, confirmed the elimination of multiple senior commanders and several fighters who were actively coordinating attacks within the region,” Ejodame stated.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the aircrew and support personnel for what he described as their professionalism and combat effectiveness.
He reiterated the Air Force’s resolve to deny insurgents any operational base across the country.
“There will be no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria,” the Air Chief was quoted as saying, pledging sustained air offensives in support of ground troops battling insurgents in the North-East.
Security analysts say the renewed air campaign forms part of intensified efforts by the military to degrade insurgent networks, cut off supply chains and restore stability in troubled communities across Borno and neighbouring states.
Sambisa Forest has long served as a stronghold for insurgent groups operating in the North-East, making it a recurring target of both air and ground offensives by Nigerian forces.
