The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it has secretly banned the sale and use of Amoxicillin in Nigeria, describing the report as false and misleading.
In a press release posted on its X handle, the agency said there was no truth in the viral video suggesting that the widely used antibiotic had been withdrawn from the Nigerian market, stressing that no such regulatory action had been taken.
“NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria, either secretly or openly,” the agency stated, adding that any regulatory action affecting medicines or health products is always communicated publicly through its official platforms.
The agency explained that when products are found to be substandard, falsified or unsafe, it issues formal notices such as recalls, safety alerts and blacklists, which clearly specify affected product names, batch numbers, manufacturers and the steps to be taken by healthcare providers, distributors and the public.
According to NAFDAC, blacklisting, where necessary, is applied only to specific companies or products involved in regulatory breaches, safety concerns or unethical practices, and does not amount to a blanket ban on an essential medicine.
The regulator warned members of the public against relying on unverified information from social media, urging Nigerians to seek clarification only from its official channels.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines in circulation, while encouraging healthcare professionals and patients to continue using approved antibiotics responsibly and in line with medical prescriptions.
