The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday destroyed expired, counterfeit, unregistered, and smuggled products valued at ₦10.9 billion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The items, sourced from five South-West states excluding Lagos, as well as Kwara State in the North-Central zone, were incinerated at an approved dumpsite provided by the Oyo State Government to ensure minimal environmental impact.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the South-West Zonal Director, Mrs. Roseline Ajayi, emphasized that the exercise was a demonstration of the agency’s commitment to ensuring public health and safety.
“The effort of ridding the system of unwholesome and substandard regulated products from circulation is being supported by sister agencies represented here among whom are the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), the Nigerian Police, the Department of State Service (DSS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” she said.
The destruction process was witnessed by key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, and representatives from the NSCDC, NDLEA, and other government agencies.
The products destroyed included expired items voluntarily surrendered by distributors, unregistered and unwholesome goods seized during raids, as well as fake and smuggled imported products.
“The worth of what is being destroyed today is estimated at ₦10,991,458,374.60,” Adeyeye noted, adding that the exercise reassured the public that confiscated products are not diverted for personal use but are disposed of under strict supervision.
The NAFDAC DG also called on Nigerians to collaborate with the agency in its fight against substandard, fake, and counterfeit products in the country.
“As a matter of fact, every Nigerian is expected to be an ambassador of NAFDAC, joining hands with the agency in the bid to sanitise the food and drug sector in Nigeria,” she added.
