The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) has strongly refuted recent claims circulating on social media that almost all paracetamol tablets sold in Nigeria are under-dosed, dismissing the findings as misleading.
In a statement issued on Monday, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, criticized the questionable scientific basis behind the research publication.
Adeyeye clarified, stating, “NAFDAC is aware of a recent story alleging that nearly all paracetamol tablets sold in Nigeria are under-dosed.
We categorically state that the report is misleading, and the science is questionable.”
Responding swiftly, the Director-General initiated a market survey, directing the sampling and testing of paracetamol tablets.
She emphasized NAFDAC’s commitment to maintaining a quality culture and adherence to international standards in testing procedures.
Addressing concerns, Adeyeye met with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) to communicate NAFDAC’s proactive measures.
She assured the public that the agency’s ISO 17025-certified laboratories, subject to annual recertification, employ state-of-the-art equipment for testing.
Emphasizing their commitment to quality control, Adeyeye mentioned, “NAFDAC does yearly post-marketing surveys of medicines to ensure quality and safety.
Any deviation results in public alerts or recalls. In the last two years, 88 public alerts and 32 recalls have been issued for medicines and foods.”
Reiterating their methodology, Adeyeye affirmed, “NAFDAC uses international standards and scientific methods to survey paracetamol products.
Samples are collected nationwide, tested using well-calibrated, state-of-the-art instruments.”
Highlighting their extensive laboratory network, she added, “NAFDAC has five ISO-17025 Laboratories across the country and a WHO Prequalified Laboratory in Yaba, Lagos.”
Adeyeye assured the public of updates following laboratory testing, reinforcing NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s health.
She concluded, “NAFDAC wishes to reassure the public that the agency is vigilant in her responsibilities.”
