The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” sachets, warning that consumption of the fake product poses serious health risks.
In a statement issued on Friday, the agency explained that Promasidor Nigeria Limited, the official producer of Cowbell milk, had stopped manufacturing the “Our Milk” variant since September 2023, replacing it with Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.”
Despite this, unscrupulous producers have flooded the market with counterfeit 12g sachets mimicking the discontinued packaging, complete with the Cowbell brand name, NAFDAC registration number, and official design.
“These counterfeit products are not manufactured or distributed by Promasidor. They bear unauthorised use of the brand name, NAFDAC registration number, and packaging design,” the statement read.
NAFDAC warned that the consumption of such fake products could expose unsuspecting Nigerians to toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, and diluted ingredients.
“The risks include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and in severe cases, death. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable,” the agency stated.
The regulatory body advised Nigerians to be vigilant, insisting that only Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness” is currently approved for sale. It urged consumers to report suspicious products to the nearest NAFDAC office or call the agency’s hotline for prompt action.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to clamping down on the illegal trade, stressing that counterfeiters will face prosecution.
