The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a major operation depot dealing in expired and falsified drugs at Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa area of Abia State.
The discovery was made on Friday, with the agency revealing that the illegal operation was being run from several buildings situated near the Ariaria International Market.
In a statement posted on X, NAFDAC disclosed that the operation involved the repackaging and revalidation of expired medicines, including potassium chloride, allergy medications, immune boosters, and cholesterol treatments, for resale.
This posed a significant health risk to consumers across the region.During the raid, machines used to rebrand and alter expiry dates on these pharmaceutical products were also discovered on-site.
Despite efforts to apprehend him, the key suspect behind the operation remains at large.
However, several individuals linked to the illicit trade were arrested.
NAFDAC’s operation was carried out in collaboration with various security agencies, as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of counterfeit and substandard drugs in the country.
The agency has pledged to continue its fight against the production and distribution of dangerous pharmaceutical products, stressing that it is reviewing existing laws to impose stricter penalties on those involved in such criminal activities.
This latest discovery is part of NAFDAC’s broader efforts to ensure consumer safety and protect public health by ridding Nigeria of substandard and falsified drugs.
