The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has taken custody of 12 trafficked victims rescued by the Kano State Hisbah Board during a joint operation at Karota Luxurious Park, Hotoro, Kano.
The victims, all females aged between 15 and 50, were intercepted on Sunday, August 31, while being transported to Ghana en route to Saudi Arabia for alleged labour exploitation.
NAPTIP Kano Zonal Commander, Abdullahi Babale, who confirmed the development on Monday, said the victims were lured with promises of better job opportunities abroad but were being trafficked under deceitful arrangements.
He revealed that the rescued women hailed from Kano, Katsina, Borno, Jigawa, and Zamfara states.
“One suspect, Mohammed Saleh, 45, has been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to track other members of the trafficking syndicate,” Babale disclosed.
He added that the operation followed the directive of NAPTIP’s Director-General, Hajiya Binta Adamu-Bello, to intensify intelligence-led crackdowns on trafficking networks across the country.
The Zonal Commander commended the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, and the Kano State Government for their collaboration in combating human trafficking.
Babale assured that the victims would undergo counselling and rehabilitation before being reunited with their families, in line with the agency’s victim-centred approach.
He further urged parents to be more vigilant, warning that traffickers often prey on vulnerable individuals by exploiting economic hardship and luring them with false promises of greener pastures abroad.
“We call on members of the public to report suspicious movements or activities related to human trafficking in their communities,” he said.
