The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has expressed grief over the sudden death of Dr. Oluwafemi Rotifa, a resident doctor at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), and announced the commencement of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Dr. Osundara Tope, and Secretary-General, Dr. Odunbaku Kazeem Oluwasola, the association described the incident as a “great blow” to the medical community and the nation at large.
NARD said while some reports had linked the doctor’s death to alleged prolonged working hours, it would not rush to conclusions until a thorough fact-finding process was concluded.
“We are engaging with his family, colleagues, hospital management, and relevant stakeholders to ensure a transparent investigation. Our members and the leadership of ARD RSUTH, in company with the Rivers State NMA and hospital management, have already visited the family,” the statement read.
The association stressed that doctors’ welfare and safety remained non-negotiable, warning that many of its members across the country were already battling serious health complications due to overstretched work schedules.
It recalled that several appeals for improved working conditions had been ignored by authorities, adding that the latest tragedy must serve as a wake-up call for urgent reforms in the health sector.
NARD urged the government to strengthen policies that guarantee humane working environments for doctors, noting that such measures would not only protect medical professionals but also improve patient care.
“Our departed colleague’s memory must serve as a call to action to prevent further avoidable losses within our ranks,” the statement added.
Dr. Rotifa’s death has sparked fresh concerns over the workload and welfare of medical practitioners in Nigeria, particularly in public hospitals where resident doctors often shoulder the bulk of patient care under strenuous conditions.
